ADMINISTRATOR of the EST Canarian Foundation

 

Description

The Board of Trustees of the European Solar Telescope - Fundación Canaria (EST-FC) has decided to open the call for applications for the Administrator position of the Foundation.

The EST-FC is a private non-profit organization established at the Canary Islands by Law 2/1998, of April 6, on Canary Islands Foundations and, supplementarily, by Law 50/2002, of December 26, on Foundations.

The Board of Trustees is composed by representatives of nine institutions from seven European countries: the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, the Stockholms University, the Leibniz-Institut für Sonnenphysik, the Max-Planck-Institut für Sonnensystemforschung, Astronomický ústav AV ČR, v. v. i., the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, the University of Sheffield (on behalf of the UK Universities Consortium),  and the Universitá della Svizzera Italiana.

 

Mission of the European Solar Telescope – Fundación Canaria

The EST-FC has been created to support the European Solar Telescope (EST) project through scientific research and engineering, to enhance societal benefits and business competitiveness by generating technological knowledge, to collaborate with public research organisations, to support education and training, to facilitate the establishment of the EST-ERIC for the construction phase of EST, and to foster relations with scientific and business communities, among other similar objectives.

The goal of the European Solar Telescope project is to build and operate EST, a next generation large-aperture solar telescope. With a 4.2-metre primary mirror, EST will be optimised for studies of the magnetic coupling of the solar atmosphere. To achieve its scientific goals, EST will be equipped with the most advanced diagnostic tools to probe the thermal, dynamic and magnetic properties of the solar plasma over many scale heights, by using multi-wavelength imaging, spectroscopy and spectropolarimetry. EST will specialise in high spatial and temporal resolution using several instruments simultaneously to efficiently produce 2D spectral information. EST will be located in the Canary Islands.

 

Responsibilities

The EST-FC Administrator shall be responsible for the effective management, coordination and follow-up of all the Foundation administrative activities such as human resources, finances, procurement and legal issues.

S/he shall assist the Director of the Foundation in all those tasks assigned by the Board of Trustees, aiming to achieve the Foundation’s objectives. Additionally, s/he shall act as the contact point, following the Director's guidance, with the Protectorate of the Canarian Foundations, public and private entities connected to the foundation, and its own trustees.

The Administrator shall be responsible for the administrative management associated with the Foundation's Action Plan, focussing specially on the definition of the EST-ERIC and the consolidation of the funding required to make the construction of EST a reality. S/he shall be in charge of all the documentation and reports necessary for the fulfillment of the Foundation's legal responsibilities towards the Protectorate of the Canarian Foundations and towards the Government of Spain. The Administrator shall collaborate with the engineering Project Office in all the management tasks that will be requested through the Director.

The Administrator shall report to the Director of the Foundation.

 

Qualifications and experience

The Administrator of the Foundation shall be a professional of recognised prestige in the field of management, with proven experience in international projects or centres, and demonstrated skills in different fields related to the day-to-day management administrative activity of a large project. Experience in the management of institutions with international activities or participating in large international projects will be particularly valued. S/he must demonstrate excellent organisational, team and communication skills.

 

Language skills

The position requires proficiency in written and spoken Spanish and English. Additional knowledge of any partners’ language will be positively considered.

Contract

The selected candidate will sign a renewable two-year full-time employment contract under the Spanish Law, subject to a six-month probationary period. The work center will be the HQ of the Foundation, located at C/ Vía Láctea s/n, San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Spain, with frequent work stays in La Palma, where the EST is planned to be built and where the HQ of the EST construction phase Project Office is planned to be. The gross annual salary will be around 56 000 euros. Full medical insurance for the successful candidate and accompanying spouse and children will be provided under the Spanish Social Security System.
