Solar flare as seen in Ca II H and X-rays
Hinode Broadband Filter Imager and X-Ray Telescope
Small C-class flare observed at the solar limb on 12 January 2007 with the BFI aboard the Hinode satellite. The measurements were performed in the Ca II H spectral line to sample the chromosphere. Also, observations were taken in X-rays, to monitor the corona.
In Ca II H, the solar disk is overexposed to reveal the weak signals of the structures off the disk. The movie illustrates the evolution of the flare adjacent of a sunspot, both in the chromosphere and the corona (inset). In the chromosphere, we observe instances of coronal rain falling down back to the solar surface after the flare.
