Halloween CMEs
Solar and Heliospheric Observatory
Coronal mass ejections occur when massive solar explosions blast through the Sun's outer atmosphere and plow toward Earth at speeds of thousands of kilometers per second. The small white circle in the center of the image shows the size of the Sun. This movie was taken by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph Experiment (LASCO) on the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. The CMEs events occurred between October 18 and November 07, 2003.
