Total solar eclipse 1 August 2008
12-cm, f/10 telescope plus Canon EOS 20D
This image shows the true colors of the solar corona during the eclipse of August 1, 2008, in the minimum of the solar activity cycle.
The observations were taken from Bor Udzuur (Mongolia) and the color saturation has been increased to make the colors more visible. The pink-reddish color of the prominences is caused by H-alpha emission. The green color dominating the inner corona is due to Fe XIV 530.3 nm emission, produced by hot plasma with temperatures of around 1.8 million Kelvin. The red color observed further away probably represents light from the solar photosphere scattered off by the dust particles of the F-corona (the continuation of the zodiacal light near the Sun).
