Dutch Open Telescope (DOT)

Location: Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma, Spain

Owner: Utrecht University

The Dutch Open Telescope had first light in 1997 and is one of the two solar telescopes in the Observatorio del Roque de Los Muchachos on La Palma. It is an open telescope, built on a steel tower without the traditional vacuum system used to reduce the turbulence caused by solar heating.

This innovative optical telescope uses the wind as a fan to guarantee high resolution images of the solar atmosphere. Its open construction allows long-duration time sequences to be obtained .
